Constructing the Self through the Other: The Golden Age of the Scholar-officials and the Founding of the Song Dynasty’s Penal-military Complex

Elad Alyagon received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis, where he studied the history of the Song dynasty (960-1279). His dissertation, "Inked: Song Soldiers, Military Tattoos, and the Remaking of the Chinese Lower Class," is a social history of the Song military and the lower classes of the Song period. His publications include“Tattooed Generals and Loyalist Tattoos in Song China” (in Frontiers of History in China) and “Soldier Mutinies and Resistance in the Northern Song” (in State Power in China, 900-1325).
